Draw Something: Totoro Maneki-neko Illustration

I have had this idea swimming in my head for the longest time. Totoro behaving like a Fortune Cat, or Maneki-neko, with its waving arm and cheeky grin! This illustration was first sketched over pencil using Tombow Playcolour2 twin markers in ashy brown, then filled in partially with canary yellow and rose pink (I didn’t have watercolour pencils of these colours).

Then I used the Pentel watercolour brush to pick up pigment from a Staedtler watercolour pencil in black and brushed it on a scrap piece of paper to get a suitable grey shade before filling the colour in.

It helps to test the shade on scrap paper each time you brush pigment onto the tip of the brush, as it tends to turn out really intense at the start.

A test of Chinese calligraphy (of sorts)! Almost there. Added some finishing touches by brushing on a light wash of orange and some red, and then I was done! No more procrastinating. Totoro Maneki-neko now lives in my sketchbook, safely tucked in my drawer.

I super love Totoro, the most gentle giant cat ever and its silly looking big furry belly 🙂 Liked this illustration? Drop me a comment to share what you’d like me to paint next!
